It was an emotional night on Saturday 28th of October, as Ibrahim Halawa paid tribute to his five sisters who won a Special Recognition Award at this year’s Women of the Year Awards.
Hosted by published Norah Casey, 500 guests gathered at The Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women.
Sister Stanislaus Kennedy was named the overall Woman of the Year 2017 Award, while Kathleen Watkins was inducted into The Irish Tatler Hall of Fame. Sisters Aoibhin and Doireann Garrihy each won awards on the night, with the media award going to RTE’s Caitriona Perry, newly appointed to their flagship Six One News. Other winners included Alison Spittle, Niamh Farrell of Ham Sandwich and Senator Lynn Ruane.
The purple carpet was a glamorous roll call of who’s who in Ireland, with Samantha Mumba, Rosanna Davison, Thalia Heffernan and more all making an appearance in a hint of purple to support the nominated charity on the night, Women’s Aid. See the purple carpet gallery here.
The glittering gala ceremony saw performances by singer Lisa Hannigan, dance from Monica Loughman’s elite ballet group, 12-year old busking sensation Allie Sherlock, author/actress Tara Flynn and fashion shows throughout the night displayed the wealth of talent in Irish design.
Speaking about the awards, Norah Casey commented:
“We have some amazing women award winners this year including the Halawa sisters who stood steadfast by their brother campaigning tirelessly for his release. When the judging panel choose these women for a significant achievement award, little did we know how momentous the week would be with Ibrahim’s release.
“I started these awards 17 years ago to recognize iconic Irish women in all walks of life but also to shine a spotlight on these amazing role models so young women could believe that they can achieve anything in modern Ireland. When I was growing up I would never have said I wanted to be a business woman, I didn’t even know what a business woman was. Now it’s our biggest category.”
Congratulations to all our winners, below – full coverage of the awards can be seen in the December issue of Irish Tatler, out on 7 November.
