The Beauty Of Sleep: 6 Simple Ways To Actually Fall Asleep Tonight

Night, night!

Calm your anxious thoughts, relax your body and settle in for a better night of sleep

A leader in clean science-based skincare and wellness, is Works was one of the fi rst beauty brands to focus on the importance of sleep and its link to skin health and wellbeing. Since 2004 it has sold over 6 million pillow sprays. As This Works CEO Dr Anna Persaud explains, quality sleep is at the very heart of looking, and feeling, good.

Why is sleep so important?

"Sleep is essential for both our mental and physical wellbeing. As a beauty brand we’re particularly aware that when we sleep our skin goes into repair and restore mode, meaning it removes toxins, repairs cell and DNA damage caused by the environment, replaces ageing cells and creates new ones. That’s why after good quality sleep, skin looks fresher, younger and more radiant. If we regularly do not get enough sleep then our overnight repair is compromised and we quickly see the impact of this, for example in the appearance of dark circles under our eyes, changes in skin texture, dry skin and the onset of fine lines and wrinkles."

What is the core idea behind the This Works brand?

"Our focus is to create products that solve problems faced by our consumers. We’re also rigorous on ensuring our products are backed by science. For example, clinical trials on our skincare are standard and our fragrance blends are developed using independent neuro-imaging studies looking at the impact of essential oils on the brain so that we can be sure they do what we say they do. The products work in harmony with your body clock, 24 hours a day, and they’re proven to work."

Can you tell us a little about the Superblend that’s in the products?

"At the heart of each This Works product is a Superblend - a powerful trio of natural actives, botanical oils and functional fragrance, each selected for their specific benefits and expertly blended without unnecessary chemicals. Our pillow sprays feature a 100 per cent natural essential oil blend of lavender, camomile and vetivert which in an independent functional MRI (fMRI) brain scan was seen to have a stimulating effect on the area of the brain associated with emotions, pleasure and calmness. In independent user trials* 89 per cent fell asleep faster than normal, 97 per cent slept better than normal and 98 per cent felt more refreshed in the morning"

Up your Sleep Hygiene

In a recent This Works survey** over half of respondents (53 per cent) reported struggling with broken sleep during COVID-19 lockdown and two thirds (66 per cent) felt more anxious. Here, Dr Persaud shares her top tips for getting a great night’s rest.

  •  Restrict technology usage in the hour before bed. The blue light emitted by our devices suppresses the release of melatonin which can delay sleep
  • Keep lighting low in the evening, for example using uplighters rather than overhead lighting
  • Ban loud sounds or music and listen to calming music instead.
  • Keep your evening meal light and avoid anything that may raise your body temperature such as hot spices
  • Avoid over-stimulation, for example never watch anything distressing or frightening at night. If you’re struggling with a racing mind, try a simple meditation with an app such as Calm.
  • Spritz your pillow spray liberally over your duvet, pillow and pyjamas as you’re preparing for bed to help relieve tension and calm your mind.
