Are You Following The Right Skincare Regime For Your Age?

Ask yourself, would you now check a different box when it comes to age? If you’ve moved up an age bracket your skincare routine needs to compensate.

Everyone’s skin is unique, and it’s constantly changing and adapting to its surrounding environment. This is why it’s so important to know how you should be switching up your skincare, not only for the seasons but also according to your age. So, to help you devise up the ultimate skincare routine for your age, we've teamed up with NUXE to give one lucky Irish Tatler reader the chance to win the NUXE skincare range of their choice!

There are a lot of factors that go into determining a skincare routine that’s right for you. Obviously, your skin type plays a major factor in figuring out what products are and are not for you. Your environment and lifestyle habits should also be considered. But arguably none is more important than your age.

It isn’t about turning back time or trying to hide every wrinkle, mark, or texture, it’s about having happy, healthy skin. You can choose to do as much or as little as you feel comfortable with – everyone has a different idea of how they’d like to live in their skin, after all.

That said, what works for you in your 20s won't necessarily work for you in your 30s. Think about it: you've been using the same hydrating moisturiser for over five years but recently, you're just not seeing the dewy benefits you're used to. While this, of course, could be the result of months spent inside with sunshine deprived skin and stress-induced breakouts - it's likely it has more to do with your age. See, our skin changes as we get older. Collagen production and cell turnover slow down around the time we hit 30. Then, as our hormones shift the closer we get to menopause, natural oil production can subside, leaving skin feeling drier. As all of this happens within our bodies, external factors such as sunlight and pollution can result in discolouration on the skin, if it isn’t protected properly with SPF. The good news, though, is that there are ingredients on the market meant to combat exactly these issues.

To help you suss out exactly which ones to use (and when!), we chatted with the experts over at NUXE about how to put together a skincare routine at any age.

IF YOU'RE In your Thirties:

Between your 30s and 40s, you’ll start to notice considerable differences in your skin, so it’s time to take corrective as well as preventative steps.

IF IN THE MIRROR YOU CAN SEE: Skin is losing its radiance and luminosity; the first signs of ageing are starting to appear.

THE SOLUTION: Enriched with an anti-oxidant complex containing Jasmine Flower, the NUXE Crème Prodigieuse Boost range offers multi-correction of the first signs of ageing by working to combat the harmful effects of an intense lifestyle (stress, fatigue, etc.) and an urban environment on the skin. Boosting the skin’s energy and radiance, for smooth and plump skin with a refreshing sensation.

THE ROUTINE: In the morning, after gently cleansing your skin, apply the Energising Priming Concentrate using your fingertips, making light tapping movements. Then use the appropriate daycare based on your skin type: Multi-Correction Gel-Cream (for normal to combination skin) or Multi-Correction Silky Cream (for normal to dry skin). To brighten the eye area, apply the Multi-Correction Eye Gel Balm and then gently tap the skin with your fingertips, working towards the contours of the face. In the evening, after removing all traces of makeup, repeat the routine - this time applying the Night Recovery Oil Balm.

if you're in your forties:

In your 40s, the signs of ageing are more definite. It’s time to use products with powerful antioxidants and other actives, such as peptides, that can help stimulate and increase collagen and elastin production.

IF IN THE MIRROR YOU CAN SEE: Skin is starting to lose firmness and tone, first expression lines and wrinkles are becoming visible.

THE SOLUTION: Thes Merveillance Expert skincare products strengthen the skin's elasticity to provide a “lifting” effect. The Daylily Oleoactive contains <8412 active molecules which stimulate proteins with a skin-firming effect, helping to reduce wrinkles.

THE ROUTINE: After gently cleansing your skin, apply the Merveillance Expert Lifting Serum over the face. Warm a pea-sized amount of serum between the palms of your hands and apply over your face using a gentle, pressing motion with the flat of your palms. Then apply the Merveillance Expert Lifting Eye Cream around the eye area. Using your middle finger, gently smooth over the lower and upper eyelids from the inner eye area working outwards to the outer eye. Maintain pressure for 3 seconds when you reach the tops of the temples. Repeat this 3 times. Gently pinch along both eyebrows at the same time. Repeat this from the inner eyebrow all the way along to the ends of the brow. Repeat this 3 times. Finally, apply the Merveillance Expert Correcting Cream. During the day, apply the correcting fluid, correcting cream or rich correcting cream depending on your skin type. At night, apply the regenerating night cream.  Apply by using short smoothing motions, alternating the hands, working from the bottom of your face upwards. Pay particular attention to your facial contour and temples. Repeat these movements on each side of the face.

if you're in your fifties:

Your 50s are typically the decade when huge hormonal shifts in your body cause noticeable changes. To counteract this, incorporate rich moisturisers to help rebuild volume from within.

IF IN THE MIRROR YOU CAN SEE: Skin is starting to slacken, wrinkles are visible, the complexion is becoming dull and less even.

THE SOLUTION: The renewing power of Saffron and Bougainvillea Bi-Floral Cells stimulates the production of new major skin cells, for a re-densifying effect. Thanks to this global anti-ageing skincare range, Nuxuriance Ultra, wrinkles are filled and the face's oval outline appears redefined.

THE ROUTINE: In the morning, after gently cleansing your skin, apply the serum on the face, neck and décolleté. Warm a pea-sized amount of the serum between the palms of your hands and apply to your face using pressing movements, keeping your hands flat. Do the same on your neck and décolleté. Repeat 3 times on each zone. Then, apply the eye and lip contour creams. Press once to dispense the product and distribute between the middle fingers on each hand. Using this finger to smooth your lower and upper eyelids, working towards the outside maintaining an upward pressure for 3 seconds on the temples, repeat 3 times. Pinch both eyebrows simultaneously. Repeat the process, working towards the outer side of the eye. Repeat 3 times. Use your middle finger to smooth your top and bottom lips, first in one direction and then in the other. Then, pull the corners of your lips upwards and maintain the pressure for 3 seconds. Repeat this 3 times. Apply the facial cream to your face, neck and décolleté. Do so by warming a pea-sized amount of the cream between the palms of your hands. Apply using brief smoothing strokes with alternate hands, working from the bottom of the face upwards. Pay particular attention to your facial contour and temples. Repeat these movements on each side of the face. Once or twice a week, apply the 'fresh effect' anti-ageing roll-on mask. Leave on for 10 minutes, then remove the excess product with a cotton pad.

if you're in your sixties:

At this time, lack of elasticity will be visible both in the face and the neck, due to thinner skin and weaker muscles. If you’ve been slapdash about taking your SPF right down to your décolleté, then prolonged UV exposure will also have had an effect. If you haven’t already started, use a strong active such as retinol, a wonder ingredient that helps support collagen production to improve plumpness. Hydrating serums that can be layered under other products are also ideal.

IF IN THE MIRROR YOU CAN SEE: Skin is becoming drier and thinner due to age; it is losing density and radiance. Deep wrinkles are visible.

THE SOLUTION: The Nuxuriance Gold skincare range is the absolute anti-ageing collection for dry skin weakened by age, concentrating the power of Saffron and Bougainvillea Bi-Floral Cells. Together with Porcelain Rose Oleoactive and a Nutri-Restorative Complex (with extracts of Jiaogulan and Cistus Flower), it provides renewal, nourishment, elasticity and radiance. Anti-ageing power you can see and feel: women feel better about themselves and more confident; as proven by a study conducted by Neuroscience researchers.

THE ROUTINE: After cleansing your skin, apply Nuxuriance Gold Nutri-Revitalising Serum. Dab lightly over the face, neck and décolleté. Gently smooth the texture, working outwards over the face. Then apply Nuxuriance Gold Radiance Eye Balm. Apply light pressure using your index and middle fingers, working outwards and starting with the lower eyelid. Finish by applying Nuxuriance Gold Nutri-Fortifying Oil-Cream in the morning, and Nuxuriance Gold Nutri-Fortifying Night Balm in the evening. Do so by applying the product to the fingertips and warm the texture lightly between the hands. Then apply to your face, neck and décolleté using gentle upward smoothing movements. Place your hands flat over your face, covering your chin, cheeks and forehead and leave them there for a few moments to encourage absorption into your skin. Repeat on your neck and over your décolleté.
