She’s one of the most trusted names in beauty - in Ireland and beyond - and for Jennifer Rock, skin has been a passion since her teens.
It all began when her mum took the then-thirteen-year-old Rock for a facial as a birthday treat. The teen, who was suffering from acne at the time, was fascinated by the products and techniques the therapist used and the experience would spark what would become a life-long love of skincare.
A career as a therapist eventually followed and her interest in education led Rock to subsequently create the Skin Nerd Network. A true front runner in the virtual space, it offered online skin consultations and personalised skincare advice. Then in 2019, she launched Skingredients, her own skincare range (and has authored a few books along the way too).
We caught up with Rock to find out more about her career in skin - and the latest developments in the Skingredients line.
What do you love most about what you do?
All of it! Learning and being able to educate and enlighten people on how to take care of their skin is why I do what I do. It’s what motivates me every day.
What has been the most challenging part of building your business?
It’s not necessarily an area many tend to discuss but it can be difficult to manage cash flow when starting your own business. Achieving a work-life balance can also be hard and requires an active commitment to taking a break. Relaxation is super important to allow you to regroup and remind yourself of your priorities.
What was the best bit of advice you received?
I’ve received lots of great advice over the years including to be self-aware and surround yourself with others more skilled than you. Listen to your gut over qualification is also sound advice, as is to never stop dreaming and doing.
Have you noticed a change in what people are buying?
I have noticed people making more considered purchases and putting more research into what they buy. Self-care products have risen in popularity, with the increased focus on health encouraging consumers to make relaxation and wellbeing a priority. People also want a structure and are more likely to want and stick to a skincare routine.
Do you think Irish beauty consumers are more focused on sustainability now?
I believe so. We are becoming more aware of our footprint and although we want to feel good and see positive changes in our skin, we also want to do better by the planet. The industry is finally providing access to more sustainable options from both beauty giants and small start-ups.
What prompted your move towards Skingredients’ new recyclable packaging?
The beauty industry is an area where great change is needed to reduce harmful environmental impact and with 95 per cent of beauty packaging thrown out after one use and never recycled,** it is clear that there is much work to be done by consumers and brands. We discovered that although 90 per cent of people recycle kitchen waste, only 52 per cent do the same with bathroom products.*** We wanted to make this process a bit easier for consumers and our new refillable bottles use less packaging but contain more product, so it’s a win-win for customers. We have partnered with Plastics for Change and taken a neutrality pledge to offset the carbon emissions generated by our plastic manufacturing.
Are there any trends in the industry you’re excited about?
Tranexamic acid (or TXA) is an ingredient that I predict will cause a buzz over the next year. TXA derives from lysine (an amino acid) and works to brighten the complexion and correct dark spots and pigmentation.
Finally, what are your top three beauty products?
A broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable. I adore IMAGE Prevention & Daily Tinted Moisturiser SPF30; the sheer formula glides beautifully onto the skin and absorbs quickly.
Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm is great for taking the day away, especially when used alongside the Cleanse Off Mitt and Skingredients Sally Cleanse is the cleanser I wish my teenage self could have discovered.
I love using Environ A, C & E Body Oil to keep my skin soft and supple; it’s light in texture but packed with a moisture-boosting mix of vitamins and antioxidants to nourish. Remember that due to the inclusion of active ingredients, it is necessary to have a consultation before purchasing this product.
