The Best Reusable Makeup Pads To Keep Your Skin (And The Planet) Clean

A simple switch with an enormous impact.

Reusable cotton pads aren't just more eco-friendly (by helping cut back on landfill waste caused by disposable cotton rounds and makeup wipes), they're also a more affordable option. That's why we've teamed up with Seoulista Beauty to give one lucky Irish Tatler reader (and a friend!!!) the chance to win the ultimate self-care package.

It’s a well-known fact that the beauty industry is a major contributor to the overwhelming amount of permanent waste produced annually—but it’s not just plastic bottles and packaging that are problematic. The small, single-use items we reach for daily and throw in the bin without even thinking are a major culprit; we’re talking about all of those disposable face wipes, cotton buds and cotton pads that so many of us rely on to remove makeup every night.

While convenient, the majority of cotton buds, cotton pads and face wipes we buy contain the plastic, polypropylene, which doesn't decompose. They enter our landfills or our oceans, and stay there, destroying the homes of the wildlife that live thereOf the small, single-use items we can recycle, half of us don’t. Recent research has found that over 56 per cent of people in the UK and Ireland (that’s over 5 million people) don’t recycle bathroom products because of the inconvenience. In fact, the way that we dispose of our face wipes and cotton pads has huge ramifications – 93% of sewer blockages are caused by the 9.3 million face wipes flushed down the toilet every day. Last year, Irish Water cleared more than 6,000 sewer blockages around the country which were caused by inappropriate items such as face wipes and cotton pads being flushed down the toilet. Given the number of face wipes and/or cotton pads we'd personally use throughout our lifetime, a small switch on our part, can in fact make an enormous difference.

That's all before mentioning just how terrible face wipes are for your skin. They're ineffective at cleansing properly, and the ingredients list isn't doing us any favours either. So what are we actually supposed to use instead? That's where reusable makeup remover pads and cloths come in. Not only do they enable us to use the same piece of material over 500 times, they're also a more affordable option. While a microfiber towel or washable round might initially cost more than a pack of single-use wipes, it's a one-off expense that you'll be able to use for months – or even years. Throw them into the wash along with the rest of your laundry once or twice a week and you're good to go. But where does one get their hands on such sorcery? Allow us to introduce you to what I believe are the best reusable cotton pads on the market right now: Seoulista Beauty - Magic Cleanse

Magic Cleanse Pack of Three, €16.99, Seoulista Beauty

Created by Northern Ireland beauty mogul Una McGurk, Magic Cleanse is a reusable cleansing tool designed to cleanse our faces, using only water. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, I put them to the test and believe me - they work. Each reusable round has two sides: a textured -kitchen-towel-like back and a fluffy bath-towel-like front. You start by using t he gentle, exfoliating action of the textured side which helps to loosen makeup, oil and daily grime from the surface of the skin. Then, simply flip over to the fluffy side and the natural, superfine and antibacterial fibres grip and lift oil, makeup and impurities from deep within pores as you sweep the pad across the skin. While I would always advise you to double cleanse, these reusable cotton pads from Seoulista Beauty removes makeup and cleanses the skin better than any face wipe or micellar water I've ever used. Ideal for those nights when you just don't have it in you to get up and begin an extensive cleansing routine or as a pre-cleanse step to ensure all makeup, oil and dirt is removed from the skin before following up with your favourite facial cleansers.

Speaking of, Magic Cleanse works just as well when accompanied by the use of a cleansing balm or oil. Not to mention that along with removing makeup and thoroughly cleansing the skin, these reusable rounds are also great for applying products such as essences or toners. After use, just rinse under the tap and hang up to dry and machine-wash once a week. It really couldn't be simpler. What's more, they last for up to 200 washes each which is the equivalent of ten months of use.

But of course, the only way you can judge is for yourself. That's why we've teamed up with Seoulista Beauty to give one lucky Irish Tatler reader (and a friend!!!) the chance to win the ultimate self-care package including: the new 3 pack of Magic Cleanse, t he new Wonderberry Instant Facial as well as a Rosy Toes Instant Pedicure.
