The Best Fake Tan Products For Your Face – And How To Use Them

No longer have we to worry about the telling streaks or giveaway smudges of orange that have feared tanners past – instead, enjoy a glow that will beckon all and sundry to wonder where you've been.

Extend your glow long past summer with a myriad of tanning products designed specifically for your visage.

A greying complexion does not a happy face make, not least when it’s accompanied by endless rain and little promise of a break in the grey clouds. But as with most beauty issues, there's a product for that.

We’ve already talked about the best fake tans money can buy, but with a multitude of new facial tanning formulas on the market that can deem your daily Zoom call a lot less frightening, there's a lot more to discuss by way of a glowing mug.

Credit where credit's due, face tanners have come a long way. Nowadays they combine skincare with self-tan, plus formulations are lighter, helping to prevent breakouts and impart a more natural-looking glow.

Unlike body tan, facial tanning is a much more low-maintenance endeavour. The rule of thumb is to never exfoliate on the day, opting for the day before instead. Also, moisturise the exfoliated areas – as well as your hairline, elbows, knees and hands – to ensure an even base.

Of course, you can use body tan on your face, but discerning types know that these formulas can be less than kind to the more sensitive of us.

Here's our pick of the best:

Tan Organic Facial Tan Oil 50ml (€24.99)

A unique blend of eight different natural oils – including argan oil, borage seed oil and rosehip oil – Tan Organic's Facial Oil is light, easily absorbed and ideal for all skin complexions. Rich in vitamin E and antioxidants which hold the ability to regress the signs of ageing, add a couple of drops to the face throughout the year, summer and winter alike. Top tip: Mix a drop of serum with your foundation, it will glide smoothly and give you a lovely dewy finish.

Pestle & Mortar Glow Drops (€38)

Free from alcohol, colour or fragrance, Pestle & Mortar's first tanning product Glow Drops deliver a natural sun-kissed glow without drying out the skin. Enriched with hyaluronic acid for skin hydration, mix 1-8 drops with your moisturiser and apply evenly to the face.

As per the brand's directions, 1-2 drops = natural radiance, 2-4 drops = sun-kissed glow
and 4-8 drops = golden glow. Wash hands thoroughly after application.

St Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist 80ml (€22.49)

The easiest entry point into a foolproof facial tan is by way of a facial mist. Akin to the refreshing ones we keep desk-side to refresh throughout the day, these deliver the tanning molecule, DHA, onto the skin via a quick spritz to easily slot into your everyday beauty regime. St Tropez's iteration is blended with green mandarin and hibiscus flower to help fend off pollution and infuse skin with hydration, all while giving a golden glow akin to that of its infamous body tan.
