WATCH: A Short Film on the Notion of ‘Celebrity’ to Mark Chanel No.5’s 100-Year Anniversary

Chanel is taking the commemoration as an opportunity to reflect on the new forces of celebrity that will shape the next 100 years.

The house has called on friends from varying disciplines and geographies to take part in the film, which is part of a series celebrating the world’s most iconic perfume.

What is celebrity?

Launching today and titled "Celebrity By" is an intimate short film in which Chanel brings together six prominent figures and inspiring voices in their respective fields to reflect on and analyse the ever-evolving notion of "celebrity" in an intimate short film.

Speaking from six different viewpoints and representing the worlds of academia, dance, media and film, those chosen offer a unique perspective on how "celebrity" continues to shape and reshape culture, creativity, and society.

Appearing in the film are celebrated actress and face of N°5 Marion Cotillard, distinguished ballet dancer and choreographer Marie-Agnès Gillot, Chinese fashion media icon Hung Huang, renowned psychologist Laurie Santos, esteemed former editor of Vanity Fair Graydon Carter, and international dance star Lil Buck.

Topics discussed span the cultural and intellectual impact of celebrity: its legacy, its influence on psychology, and its role in shaping creativity for current and future generations.

100 Years of Celebrity

More than a perfume, the creation of Chanel N°5 was a landmark moment in the history of beauty, revolutionising the way women smell and continuing to transcend generations. Unlike any scent that went before it, Chanel N°5 did much to inspire artists, photographers, filmmakers, writers and the public for decades.

According to the legend, it was the nostalgic smell of fresh linens and yellow soap from her childhood that left a lasting impression on Coco Chanel, and when creating N°5, she tasked French perfumer Ernest Beaux with coming with a scent that would make its wearer "smell like a woman, and not a rose".

This film is the latest in a series of content from the house as it reflects on “100 Years of Celebrity” as N°5 reaches its centennial anniversary, a commemoration which Chanel is taking as an opportunity to reflect on the new forces of celebrity that will shape the next 100 years.
