Forget Expensive Lash Serums – Here Is What You Need To Make Your Lashes Longer And Better

I am no expert... I just have a lot of time on my hands.

These are my ultimate long-lash hacks.

As new trends are emerging which have deemed mascara secondary rather than desert-island-worthy, the topic of going how to make good with your lashes has cropped up in beauty circles quite often as of late.

For someone who foregoes full makeup most weekdays, my only staple Monday - Friday is usually concealer and a good eyelash curler, and as someone who relies on their lashes to make them not look like a naked molerat – I'm confident in my abilities as a lash celebrator.

You need to purchase some castor oil.

Found in most pharmacies (often behind the till with no need for a prescription) for, under a fiver, this little beauty is the key to strong and sustained lash growth. Beautifully big bottles of the stuff can also be found in Middle Eastern supermarkets.

Castor oil is the main ingredient in some of those ferociously expensive lash serums one can purchase from Instagram. It's a hair growth stimulant – with hundreds of years of praise – that some women even massage into their scalp in times of hair loss.

Keep it beside your bed. Clean off an old mascara wand/purchase a spoolie and coat both your lashes and brows in it each night. You'll notice compliments within a fortnight.

However, DO check that the product is 100% pure castor oil to avoid irritation.

A good eyelash curler is key. For those of you who are afraid of them – fair play, they are terrifying.

Tiny little eye-opening contraptions that look like they should have been done away with in the Elizabethan era. However, they are entirely necessary to make lashes appear longer.

There are very few things I am confident enough to herald about in my life – but the perfect eyelash curler is one of them. I have tried, quite frankly, a stupid amount of them and I can confidently say that the one I carry in my bag every day is the best.

Kevyn Aucoin's eyelash curler is worth the hype. Perfectly curved, sized and with more punch than any other – this curler doesn't even need to be heated to provide an all-day structured curl.

Quite obvious, but you need a great mascara.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that you don't need to spend a lot of money on your mascara. The tubes I buy time and again fluctuate in price but more often than not, they're under €8.

It mostly depends on what look you're after, quite frankly, and avoiding ones that crisp and smudge at every turn.

My personal pick from years of incessant searching for The One include:

For separation: This stuff is incredible. When used in conjunction with a wand with a thicker brush, the possibilities are endless. I always keep this at my desk in work for last-minute excursions. Also, the price can't really be beaten.

Glam & Doll Boost Lash Growth Volume Mascara, €4.95, Catrice

For a fluffy, fluttery lash: The original Benefit hype-beast and the best. The thick wand brush coats and elongates everything you've got and then some. It also doesn't flake off at any stage throughout a whole working day, which we all know is as rare as a Trump-free media day.

Badgal Mascara, €27, Benefit

For an all-day curl: I will herald Kevyn Aucoin until the day I die. His products have made my heated curling products entirely redundant and I am forever grateful because they are terrifying. I am very hesitant to spend almost €30 on mascara but it's truly worth it.

The Essential Mascara, €29, Kevyn Aucoin

For extreme length: Deemed by a myriad of beauty editors as 'as good as a lash lift', this L'Oreal number has swayed me from my thick and fluffy mascara spoolie addiction. The brush has a mix of long and short bristles to grab every lash. I

It's on the spiky-plasticky side, which is great for shorter lashes, yet has some heft to it to help with volume.

False Lash Bambi Mascara, €13.99, L'Oreal Paris

For the blackest lash: I first used this mascara as a gift from my mother. She had been away on holidays at the time and had forgotten to pick me up a present so nabbed a tube at duty-free.

As someone who has hated almost every present I've ever gotten, I was pleasantly surprised. Firstly, when you use it you feel like an Archduchess. The golden exterior does wild things to your head.

Then the inky, blackest black product itself packs a massive punch in terms of definition and staying power. Thanks, Mum!
