This Cleaning Hack Will Cut The Time Spent Washing Your Brushes In Half

How did we not think of this?

When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? If you have to think about it, it’s probably been too long.

Makeup brushes are essential tools in almost every makeup routine. They do everything from blending, smoothing, and buffing anything from foundation to bronzer onto the skin. And if you’re applying makeup daily—whether a full face or just a touch of it—that means your brushes are working hard.

Now, here's the no-so-fun part. Over time, your brushes and sponges become the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, dead skin cells, oils, and dirt. All this buildup can begin to clog your pores and cause breakouts. Plus, dirty brushes don’t work as well as clean brushes do—makeup can end up looking streaky and uneven due to the gunky bristles. Grossed out yet? Don’t worry—it’s never too late to start getting your brushes in perfect shape and thanks to Jamie Genevieve, it's now easier than ever to wash your makeup brushes.

TRENDING TODAY: Zoom Fatigue Is A Real Diagnosis, Experts Say

Last month, she took to Instagram to share her genius washing makeup brushes hack with her trusted followers – all 1.3 million of them. In a video originally posted to TikTok, she shared a step-by-step guide on how to clean your makeup brushes.

You will need just two things:

  1. Soap
  2. A sieve

Jamie said that the soap does not have to be any special one for cleaning brushes, she uses the Rose Castille soap from Dr Bronner but says that you can use whichever one you like.

Here are the steps:

  1. Fill a sink with warm water.
  2. Add the soap.
  3. With your sieve in the water, dip your makeup brush in and use the sieve to gently scrub it clean.

Watch the trick in action here.

It sounds so simple. It's like using an electric makeup brush cleaner - only it actually works. There's us leaving our makeup brushes to gather bacteria and dust until we inevitably bite the bullet and purchase news ones, when we could've just let our sieve do the hard work for us.

And because we’re dedicated to Serious Beauty Journalism, we'll be trying it tonight. Watch this space.
