The 6 Red Lipsticks I Always Reach For

Red lipstick: all the versatility of beauty's Swiss army knife with none of the functionality.

Red alert.

Finding the perfect shade of red lipstick is similar to the struggle that is finding the perfect pair of jeans. However, once you find that exact shade, it can instil more power into you than watching Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez take on the world of American politics.

I've always been a fan of red lipstick. I'm pale so it suits my complexion, and lucky for me, my older sister snatched a pair of tweezers from my hands when I was 13 telling me I'd "thank her later" meaning my eyebrows didn't become a victim to the thin eyebrow trend of the 90s -which combined with a red lip compliments the whole Madonna circa 1987 aesthetic I've been trying to emulate my whole life.

From pinks that are sort of red, blue-based reds, orange reds, red-oranges (yes, there's a difference), nude reds and then your 'is this even red?' reds, I've tried them all. The list of shades I've tried could go on and on and while I would continue listing the very specific shades that exist in my red lipstick repertoire, I'll stick with my top 6 best red lipsticks because any more would be exhausting and anything less just isn't diverse enough.

The Classic

Arguably the most iconic red lipstick shade there is, the retro matte formula is so beloved that Mac designed an entire spin-off range compact with blushers and pigments dedicated to the shade.

Rihanna's first red lipstick under her Fenty Beauty label is not only universally flattering but once applied, the matte formula will last until you decide to wipe it off.

The Underdog

An ultra comfortable matte lipstick that doesn't crust, Shiseido's ModernMatte Powder Lipstick is a J-Beauty win.

All it takes is one swipe of this insanely bold lipstick to suddenly feel empowered.

The Perfect Shade

Slightly darker than your typical red lipstick, Red Carpet Red is probably my all-time favourite red for a nighttime look.
