As season four of Outlander wraps up on US TV, its Irish star, Caitriona Balfe has been talking about the show's most recent storylines – and the other projects she's been working on.
(Viewers on this side of the pond can stream the series on Amazon Prime – or wait for it to hit terrestrial TV – but we’ll keep this spoiler free!)
The latest series saw Caitriona’s character Claire and husband Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) start a new life in the new world of America. Reviews were mixed, however, as the show not only moved far from Scotland, but gave more times to other characters, and new writers were introduced to expand the story. For Caitriona, who has played Claire for a number of years, this was both a challenge and bonus.

Can’t believe it’s already here. Outlander Season 4 finale ... Thank you all for watching along with us. There were ups and downs but throughout it all the Fraser’s and their extended family show that in the end love reigns. I’ll be tweeting along with the East-coast airing. @outlander_starz
In an interview with Vanity Fair she revealed:
“What’s great is that [new writers] bring a new perspective. But for sure there are times that the character you’ve been building is maybe not what they’ve written. Sometimes you have resistance to something because it doesn’t feel honest. Sometimes you have resistance to something just because it’s new. Sometimes you’re like, ‘oh, I wish we hadn’t done that.’”
The influx of new ideas and talent seems to have reinvigorated the team – and with two further series of Outlander already confirmed, all involved are looking for ways to keep things interesting for cast and audience.
“As shows go on longer and longer, it becomes more difficult to keep things new and exciting, but the Outlander team is making sure nobody is resting on their laurels. We’re thinking about things we want to explore further down the line that’s not just plot.”
With season 4 done and dusted, and the inevitable ‘Droughtlander’ phase before season 5 is on screens, Caitriona is certainly keeping busy. First up is Ford v. Ferrari a major new film alongside Matt Damon and Christian Bale. Caitriona finished shooting before Christmas 2018 and says the experience was "really fun". She plays Christian’s Bale’s wife in the true story of an intense racing rivalry between US car maker Ford and the Italian company Ferrari, which came to a head at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship in France.
She’s also part of a huge voice cast for Netflix’ upcoming The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance The ten-parter is a prequel to the Jim Henson 1982 classic and also features Mark Hamill, Taron Egerton and Eddie Izzard.
1st time I've worked for The Henson Company since The Muppet Show & it was more than worth the wait! Proud to be part of the "Ginormous" Voice Cast of the prequel to one of the finest fantasy films ever made: #TheDarkCrystal #LuckyMe https://t.co/WWttPSqcUW— Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself) December 18, 2018
Caitriona told Marie Claire, “I've been doing voice over for the Dark Crystal, which is really, really fun. It's a new live action television series for Netflix. I play Gelfling princess warrior. It's been really cool. You know, I remember that film so vividly from my childhood, and it was such a cool thing back then, so it's been really fun to be a part of that.”
Ford v Ferrarri is due out in June 2019 while The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be on Netflix later this year.
