The daughter of a Garda – who quietly forged her career as a supermodel and now TV A-lister – has bagged herself four Golden Globe nominations and has plenty to celebrate.
Balfe – a former Irish Tatler cover star on two occasions – rose to stardom playing Outlander’s Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser but was always known on the Irish media circuit thanks to her early acting roles and former Victoria's Secret glory.
Outlander, a time-travel drama centring on a second World War-era nurse played by Balfe, who is transported back and forth between 18th-century Scotland and mid-20th century America – could have just been another fundamentally decent historical fantasy, but the quality of the source material (Diana Gabaldon’s series of novels), the cast, writing and directing, and the intense level of fandom the show enjoys make it a serious player.
As a result, Balfe has been nominated for a remarkable four Golden Globe awards in a row – losing out only to Taraji P Henson, Claire Foy, Elisabeth Moss and Sandra Oh – cementing her status as one of the leading actresses in American television.
Now, America is listening.
The feature, which follows 'Hollywood's rising class' praises Balfe and seven others for their "following the lead with gusto, moving seamlessly between film and TV, reaping the benefits of a renaissance in storytelling.
"From franchises to miniseries and indies, with a superhero stint here and there, these eight actors are among the busiest this fall, and you’ll see them stealing screens big and small."
Balfe features in the piece alongside fellow actresses Yara Shahidi, Zoey Deutch, Bill Skarsgård and then some in a Givenchy dress, Jimmy Choo and Van Cleef & Arpels earrings.
