The 85-year old served as the creative director of both Chanel and Fendi.

Iconic fashion powerhouse Karl Lagerfeld has died, French news site Pure People reported on Tuesday.

The German-born couturier and photographer reportedly died in hospital in Paris on Tuesday after being urgently admitted on Monday night. He was 85 years old.

The cause of his death is not known.

This follows the designer's noted absence from two Chanel fashion shows in Paris last month. Chanel told WWD in a statement that Lagerfeld had been "feeling tired," and an announcer at the show said: "We wish Mr Lagerfeld to recover quickly," without providing details.

He was best known for his work, since 1983, as artistic director at Chanel, which became one of the most profitable and admired luxury brands in the world under his tenure.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.
