Strike A Pose: Q&A With Photographer Evan Doherty

On why his P30 Pro is becoming his new weapon of choice...

When fashion and function meet. Evan Doherty waxes lyrical about the Huawei P30 Pro in his role as one of Ireland’s top photographers.

Q: What was your career ‘aha’ moment when it came to photography?

In 2009, while on my way to college, I ran into an old neighbour on the DART. He had just returned from New York where he was working in design for big brands like GAP and Old Navy, and I mentioned that I was studying photography and was eager to gain work experience wherever I could.

He happened to be working on an upcoming campaign for Dunnes Stores and suggested I come in to show the marketing team my portfolio. They liked what they saw and got me in to do a test shoot. I got the job and that summer shot the menswear, womenswear, childrens, Savida and homeware lines in the first in-house studio at its Dublin HQ.

When I saw the campaign in store windows and billboards I realised this was something I could make work as a career and soon after I left my course to pursue photography full time.

Q: In the era of ‘always on’ what are your thoughts on phone photography? Is it impacting the industry and where do you see it going?

With a change in technology comes a change in consumption. Phone technology has come such a long way in the last five years that photography will never again be consumed or experienced the same way. Everyone now has the ability to take creative photographs – exploring the different abilities of their phone’s camera and learning about things like lighting and composition.

The Huawei P30 Pro gives everyone the ability to have a DSLR in their back pockets, giving them access to features like a wide angle lens, Leica technology and AI functionality all in one.

I’m always on the go and the next photo is always in my mind’s eye but carrying a heavy DSLR is not always practical. Thankfully the Huawei P30 Pro can shoot in Pro mode, RAW format, day or night with the same capabilities of a high spec camera and the most powerful battery life on the market.

Q: What are your tips for using the Pro mode on the Huawei P30 Pro?

The best thing about Pro mode is how easy it is to use; with the click of a button, you can capture much higher quality, high-resolution images with greater capabilities for post-production.

The P30 Pro is superior to any other phone on the market when it comes to night photography. I’ve often struggled to capture great photos on other phones at festivals, gigs and other poorly-lit scenarios but that's no longer an issue for me, thanks to its night-mode setting.

Q: Any advice for aspiring photographers looking to work in the industry?

Be passionate about what you do. Shoot as much and as often as possible. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different lighting techniques, subjects and compositions.
