The New Knitwear Trend That's WFH Friendly

It all started with Katie Holmes...

Like a dressing gown, only chicer.

The cardigan was long considered one of the frumpiest things you could wear, but after an endorsement by Prada, Gucci and dozens more, they’ve become one of the key buys of the season.

It all started with Katie Holmes. In September of last year, the actress gave Instagram a heart palpitations when she was photographed wearing New York label Khaite’s Scarlet cardigan and Eda bralette, looking astonishingly chic in a minimalist get-up of blue jeans, open-toed mules, sunglasses and not much else. The set, priced at just over €2,000, sold out within 24 hours of the photo going viral, and in the following months, a legion of copycats littered the high street (Zara successfully produced its own duo, a wool-blend cardi and crop top set, priced at €46).

Since then we've seen everything from embroidered cardigans to cardigans with puffed sleeves bombard our Instagram feeds. Now, the humble cardigan has received yet another makeover – only this time, it's maxi.

Thanks to the likes of Jacquemus, maxi cardigans is now the knitwear trend influencers, celebrities and fashion editors alike are going wild for. It's statement-making, grown-up and certainly isn't messing around when it comes to the knitwear stakes.

A maxi cardigan is a versatile choice for unpredictable weather — you can wear it over your winter outfits for an extra dose of warmth or throw it on over a lighter look just in case it gets chilly. It's also WFH friendly. Think of it like a dressing gown, only chicer. It'll look great thrown over loungewear and it can even make your pyjamas look presentable for your 11 am zoom call.
