World, meet my thighs.
As a long-established midi dress devotee, so many of my warm-weather wardrobe conundrums have been solved by the easy, deftly practical nature of the humble calf-grazing robe.
When I needed something polished and office-appropriate (remember that?) for weekday mornings, I opted for a midi dress. If I had a suspicion a Saturday spent in the park could roll over in dinner and drinks with friends, I chose to wear a midi dress. When I craved the simplicity of an all-in-one outfit... you guessed it, I went with a midi dress.
Undeniably one of the most versatile items that anyone can have in their wardrobe, the midi dress has been the fail-safe style I've turned to summer after summer, and at this point, my knees probably forget what it's like to feel the sun on them.
But that, I fear, is all about to change.
Mini feels modern
With brands like Rixo, Réalisation Par and Reformation - all of whom we can thank for making floral midis an essential part of our summer wardrobe - revisiting mini silhouettes, as well as Danish designer, Cecilie Bahnsen's oversized quilted mini dresses that have been worn by ever fashion gal worth her salt recently, it seems the fashion tide is turning somewhat toward shorter hemlines.
Last time I checked, stock prices were certainly not at an all-time high, yet contrary to the Hemline Index, hemlines are indeed steadily rising again, as mini dresses no longer are the preserve of nights out.
While it goes against my better judgement (that is, to keep my razor well in retirement), when shopping online, I have noticed myself mentally filtering out most of the below-the-knee styles. Perhaps it's because there's a joyous, carefree sentiment attached to a mini dress, and boy, do we need a bit of that in our lives! Or maybe it's the fact that pairing a tiered mini dress with ugly sandals or chunky trainers right now makes you – by association – part of the Scandi cool-girl set!
What I do know is this, there are enough chic mini dresses available currently to really make me rethink all I thought I knew about my signature frock vibe and convince me that I could indeed be a short skirt gal after all.
