Prepare your eyes for a lot of neon.
This year’s series of Love Island has kept us glued to our screens with its jaw-dropping drama, super quotable phrases and endless opportunity for memes.
And while staring at Ovie for an hour is reason enough tuning in, we can’t deny that, surprisingly, the Islanders have been providing us with some serious swimwear inspiration. If you’re a regular viewer of Love Island, you’ll know that most of the time the Islanders are strutting around in their swimsuits, shorts and bikinis - so if you're going to trust anyone to tell you what bikini styles are on trend for SS'19, it should those who spend their days wearing those very trends.
Whether you're jetting off on a tropical holiday soon or are simply dreaming of warmer days to come, we've got the swimsuit shopping intel you need. From Amber's neon cross body bikini to Molly Mae's long-sleeved two-piece, these are the swimwear trends you need on your radar this year.
The Sustainable One Piece
Most notably, a trend gaining momentum not only inside the villa but on the high street too is sustainably produced swimwear. More swim labels are launching as entirely sustainably and ethically produced than ever before. When recently-dumped Lucie stepped into the villa for the first time, she did so wearing a pink one piece from a little-known brand called Pursuit the Label. Since then, it has immediately sold out. Known as ‘The Viper Suit’, this super high-cut leg swimsuit is made from 78% recycled polyamide and 100% post-consumer waste yarn. Flattering and sustainable, we call that a win-win.
The Love Island villa has been alive with shades of yellow, orange and pinks this summer and it’s sparked this season’s hottest swimwear trend: neon. eBay says its site has seen a 313% increase in searches for neon bikinis since this season began – and it’s hardly surprising, with contestants including Joanna, Amber and Molly-Mae channelling highlighter chic.
The V-Bar Bikini
Another particular style that's reigning supreme in the villa this year is the 'V-Bar Bikini'. Often referred to as the monowire bikini, everyone from Molly Mae to recently-dumped Yewnde have been sporting the trend. The bra cups sit into a stylish ‘v’ shape at the centre of the chest, showing more of your cleavage than a regular bikini. While it’s a bit more daring than most, there are some serious benefits to the trend.
When you think of the occasion for long sleeves, a few things come to mind: church, a job interview, or the first time meeting your S.O.'s parents. One thing that may not come to mind: the beach. And yet, it seems that there is something in the Love Island water bottles as we've noticed some of our favourite islanders sporting a long-sleeves bikini.
High Cut Legs
The high-cut trend has been around for a couple of seasons now, and according to the girls in the villa, it doesn't appear to be going anywhere. High-cut styles are designed to elongate and lengthen and look amazing on almost all body shapes.
