The 5 Jeans Trends Our Editors Are Willing To Fight Over

We love each other...but we love jeans more

What do you jean?

They're the bedrock of our wardrobes, the sartorial fail-safes we turn to in times of need and the fashion industry's most democratising item of clothing: Jeans, we owe you big time.

Yes, they might be a sartorial staple that transcends the seasons, but there are certain denim styles that have risen and fallen in popularity, fluctuating as tastes change and demands shift. Skinny jeans have been huge for a long time (we’re still hanging on to ours, over a decade later) and high-waisted straight legs are always chic with a white T-shirt. Then there are the cropped flare jeans that became popular again this year, which we loved wearing with ankle boots and sandals alike. However, our denim styling workshop and shopping party at Brown Thomaswe learned that there are five jeans silhouettes that you may want to add to your denim wardrobe to sit alongside your favourites, new and old.

Although these jeans trends aren’t exactly brand new, they are gaining popularity this season. We know this because we’ve seen them on plenty of our favourite stylish Instagrammers. This is great news as not only does it give us an excuse to wear jeans all the time, it also means we’ve found some truly great new outfit ideas to copy. From wide-leg silhouettes that look incredible with a boxy shirt to the resurgence of baggy “dad” jeans, as well as the latest coloured denim trend we had overlooked, keep scrolling for the five new jeans to wear and shop our picks.

The dad-trend movement has been gaining traction over the past year with padded jackets and anoraks of Balenciaga and Vetements taking centre stage. Since then, we've seen even the most fashionable women swap their wide-brimmed straw hats for old-school logo-emblazoned baseball caps - you know the ones your dad would wear on every. single. holiday. despite your cries to leave it home. Then, bringing the dad fashion trend to the masses was Bella Hadid and co. opting for white, chunky, '90s style trainers - the kind your dad still wears today.  Now we're seeing the classic '90s straight-leg jeans your dad wore to be "cool but comfortable" walk down not only the runways (which are notion filled at the best of times) but the streets of Dublin too.  And the worrying thing? We're not mad about it.

501 Cropped Jeans, €115, Levis at Brown Thomas

Skinny jeans with split hems at the side of the ankle have been quietly popping up on cool-girls like Hailey Bieber, Tania Sarin Araradian and Jodie Wood for a while now. It's a subtle detail, but the side splits are what really make these skinny jeans stand out. For one, they add a bit of flare around the ankle, making them the ideal denim fit to style with ankle boots.

They might not be the most out-there offering, but black jeans are suddenly feeling less, well, basic this season. Typically worn with chunky Dr Martens, they're ideal for balancing out roomier silhouettes.

The iconic straight leg 2000's fit proudly worn by your mum on the school run has made a storming comeback this season, challenging the skinny for its prime denim position. A firm favourite of fashion editors everywhere, they look great with everything from white tees to pretty organza blouses.

THE imitator

Coated jeans are magic, fact. Basically, they don’t feel like jeans at all. Constructed of the fabrics you typically find in denim ― cotton, polyester and elastane ― they’re finished with a waxy coating that mimics the texture and sheen of leather.
