Caitriona Balfe Is Single-Handedly Bringing Back The Polo Shirt

If anyone could make polo shirts look cool, it's going to be Caitriona Balfe.

We're calling it now, you're going to be wearing polo shirts all summer long.

Once known solely for an association with tennis, golf and boys named Chad, the polo shirt—defined loosely by short sleeves, a crisp collar, and at least a few buttons at the neck—has officially shaken off its prep-school reputation.

Suddenly its a piece worthy of being worked back into your every day, even if you don't have a 9 iron or a mean backhand. '70s-inspired stripes, cooling tech fabrics, and new slim fits have revamped the classic cut and well, now I'm obsessed and it appears I'm not alone.

Trust Caitriona Balfe to make even the most unexpected fashion trend look chic. Earlier this week, the actress was in New York to discuss the fifth season of Outlander at Build Studio alongside her co-stars Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin and while all eyes were on Balfe and Heughan's loving friendship, it was her outfit that really caught out attention.

In true Balfe fashion, the actress wore a chic grey plaid blazer with matching pants paired with a navy polo shirt and white ankle boots. Though traditionally a tailored suit and polo shirt are somewhat of an unexpected pairing (and one that personally reminds me of a school uniform), Balfe elevated this unlikely pairing by keeping a monochromatic colour palette.

On face duties – Balfe opted for glowing skin, a subtle brown smoky eye and a rosy lip which was complimented beautifully by her signature blunt bob with a shiny tousle.

We have to admit that we didn't see this one coming, but given the Caitriona Balfe endorsement, we have a feeling we'll see a lot more of polo shirts 2020. At least, if Balfe has any say in it.
