A Lesson In Grunge-Inspired Picnic Couture

...it's a thing

Check it out.

What was once a pastime beloved by the Victorian era and a summertime activity for families, the humble picnic has now received a couture makeover. No longer just a tweed preppy print associated with tea cloths and school girl pinafores, gingham is the latest trend hitting both runways and high streets alike.

While the checked fabric may be new to Instagram, it's a fabric with a rich history. The actual word 'gingham' was introduced into the English language back in the 17th century to describe a striped fabric imported from India. But as time went on, stripes turned to checks. Through the years, gingham has been employed for everything from furnishings and home decor (think local caf chic) to clothing.

In terms of fashion, the fabric grew in popularity after audiences saw Judy Garland wearing an Adrian-designed frock in the classic 1939 adaption of The Wizard of Oz. Fast forward twenty years and the gingham became the trademark print of the 1960s as it draped 'it' girls such as Brigitte Bardot and Twiggy.

From runways to red carpets to high street stores and Instagram, gingham is proving it's ready to have yet another fashion moment this Summer. Yet instead of sweetheart necklines and demure fit-and-flare silhouettes, the current styles consist more of deconstructed shapes, cropped hems and a whole host of asymmetry - which screams grunge inspired picnic couture.

That staying power has solidified gingham as a symbol of summer style. Whether it be in the form of a flowy midaxi skirt, a bucket hat or swimsuit - one must always pair with combat boots or a chunky dad inspired trainer, a vintage tee and/or distressed denim.
