At the risk of repeating ourselves, you know how bad it can be to spend hours in the sun without protection. So how can you get a sun-kissed glow without sunbathing? Self-tan, of course! That's why we're giving you the chance to win over €110 worth of he-shi tans to keep you glowing all through summer.
Once upon a time, if you asked any girl in Ireland what her essential holiday beauty product was, the answer - without any hesitation - would have been: "Hawaiin Tropic Tanning Oil, SPF 4". Yes, SPF 4 (!!!!). We were of the naive belief that the lower the SPF, the faster and deeper the tan. Some sun worshipers dared to go as low to an SPF 2 and some would ditch the protection altogether.
Fast forward ten years and the only tan Irish women are interested in, is one that comes in a bottle. Ireland loves self-tan so much that this small island of just shy of 5 million people is the second highest market for fake tan in the world. While that may be solely down to the fact the sun rarely shines in Ireland making it impossible to tan, it also may have something to do with the recent belief that sunbathing is no longer cool.
A quick scan of any beach will confirm that; people are now slathering on SPF 50, sat under an umbrella and are wearing oversized straw hats for both protective and fashion purposes.
But what about those of us who want a sun-kissed glow but without the skin damage? Enter self-tan.
However, achieving a flawless faux glow isn't as easy as lying on a towel and letting the sun do its thing. First, there's choosing the right type of tan. Mousse, lotion or mist? Then, there's nailing the technique, because no-one wants blotchy limbs. And that's before we've touched on how to ensure it sticks around.
But luckily for you guys, we're here to lift the lid on the quick, easy and downright clever tips and tricks we swear by for nailing that seamless, sun-kissed look because no-one needs to know you got it from a bottle...
Step One: Body Prep
It may sound obvious, but if you want your tan to stick around, you need to prep your skin. Applying colour over skin that hasn't been exfoliated will only fade as the cells shed, leaving you with a patchy tan. You should be gently exfoliating your body 2-3 times a week, concentrating around the knees, back of arms and elbows. After scrubbing leave the skin clear of oil and moisturiser. These are what cause streaks and blotches. Clear, clean skin is all you need.
Step Two: Pick Your Potion
First, choose your shade. If you have fair skin, opt for a light-to-medium formula, and if you have an olive-toned complexion, use a darker formula.
Next, choose your brand. When looking at tanning brands be selective and always choose a brand that has added skincare benefits. The better condition your skin is in, the longer your tan will last. he-shi as a tanning brand prides itself on offering skin care benefits containing rich moisturising ingredients that will work on the skin whilst offering a natural golden colour.
Finally, choose your formula. If you opt for the he-shi Body Sculpting Gradual Tan that increases as you apply, keep in mind that it can take up to four applications to achieve your desired shade. The he-shi Rapid 1 Hour Liquid Tan is easier to blend in and is best when in a hurry but the he-shi Overnight Ageless Tanning Balm gives the most natural glow.
Step Three: Technique
First thing's first, don't use your bare hands unless you want your palms to look like they belong to an Oompa Loompa. For seamless application, get yourself a mitt, like the he-shi Luxury Velvet Tanning Mitt, which will make light work of bronzing your back. Using a mitt ensures an even, streak-free finish. Apply the tan in a circular motion, leave hands, knees, feet and elbows till the end and use the remaining product left on the tanning mitt.
Step Four: Aftercare
Now your tan has developed and you’re happy with the results, the work doesn't stop there. Stay glowing for longer by keeping your skin hydrated. Apply body moisturiser daily after showering, this will help with the longevity of the tan. To maximise the benefits of your moisturiser, apply to damp skin. Your moisturiser will glide across the skin and be more easily absorbed.
Fake tanning is an art form. It takes practice, but with the right paint (he-shi tan), the right tools (he-shi tan mitt) and the right technique (our fake tan tips and tricks above); you can nail your at-home glow.
But if you're still scared of looking more Oompa Loompa than a bronzed goddess, then good news. We have the ultimate self-tan kit by he-shi to keep you glowing all through summer.
