It’s the fashion trend that seems to be going nowhere. Layering pieces has moved from the Insta cool girls into real life and we are hooked.
While layering your jewellery can be a great look, it does require a little thought to pull off. There are some key dos and don’ts if you want to avoid looking like you’re trying to hard.
1) Keep the metals the same
Generally speaking, people have preference towards a metal hue. You might be a gold fan, or prefer cool silver tones on your skin, or perhaps rose gold sets your heat a-flutter. The key to successful layering is to stick to just the one. That way the looks is tonal, put-together and looks elegant - which is what we’re after, right?
2) Opt for delicate pieces
Keep your chosen pieces delicate and on the dainty side for the right sort of impact. Or if you opt for one larger piece - an ear cuff or a pendant - make sure to keep the supporting players small and elegant. Play with chain and pendant lengths too, so you achieve a look that works for you. UK brand Astrid & Miyu, whose pieces have been worn by Georgia May Jagger and Pippa Middleton, has just arrived in Ireland and offers a range of pretty chains and earrings, cuffs and studs that work well together or teamed with your current jewellery wardrobe.
3) Don’t overdo it
Take inspiration from the ‘gram and people whose style you like. It can be tempting to throw all the sparkly things on at once but less is more. Layering needs a certain cleanness to look elegant; a balance of shapes and perhaps a little sparkle. For most people, focusing on one area - neck or ears - is the better option. If you're new to the layering game, try something that works on its own too, like this basic coin necklace, €145, from Astrid & Miyu (above).
