Inspired by British Aestheticism, Jonathan Anderson reaffirms the 19th century philosophy that the only 'true' art is divorced from any moral or utilitarian function in his first-of-its-kind capsule for the platform.
Utility dressing this is not.
A modern and feminine collection of ready-to-wear, shoes, bags and accessories, at the heart of the capsule’s ethos lies pivotal figures from the British Aesthetic movement; Oscar Wilde’s view on beauty as “a form of genius” as well as prints throughout from designer, Christopher Dresser and architect EW Godwin.
"I have a very compulsive way of working, where I am obsessed with something until I am not anymore, and that something does not necessarily hold a meaning. This movement was about appreciating aesthetics without searching for an answer or meaning within it", explains Anderson on the inspiration he drew for the collection.
And what results is an ode to the art of tailoring, via an array of silhouettes including oversized trousers, asymmetrical dresses and just-out-of-proportion knitwear - each refreshingly wearable.
"For me, it is all about clothes that reject restrictive conformity and push for self-expression instead. The boundaries between feminine and masculine are always blurred in my eyes, and for this collection I want the focus to be the fluid lines and soft silhouettes."
The 20-piece exclusive will launch on Saturday, the 15th September on Net-A-Poter, ahead of Anderson's Spring/Summer 2019 runway collection, which will too be celebration of craftsmanship, beauty and form above all else.
This capsule collection is doubly of note, not only because it will be the designer's first foray into the see-now-buy-now mechanic, but also because it includes Anderson's second footwear collaboration with Converse.
Accessories still clearly remaining a strong focus for the designer, as when asked about his favourite piece within the exclusive collection, he replies "My absolute favourite is the mini disc satchel, which we are very happy to introduce fresh from the runway in September, exclusively on Net-A-Porter."
