The 4 Cars Our Editors Are Willing To Fight Over

Ride on.

The wheels of our wardrobes...

Forget what you eat - you are what you drive. People think of cars as extensions of themselves and here at Irish Tatler, the cars we drive say a lot about our personalities.

When you're in the market for a new vehicle, you're looking for a car that fits the three dimensions of your own self-concept; who you think you are, who you want to be and how you'd prefer others to see you. Whether consciously or not, those three dimensions combine together to lead you towards your perfect car.

From electronic, eco-friendly engines to a family-oriented SUV, here's an inside look to the affordable cars of Irish Tatler's dreams - all thanks to First Citizen.

The City Slicker

The Car: Seat Tarraco SE Petrol

Price: From €37,115 (including metallic)

Every fashion gal knows she needs space when it comes to an on-trend drive, which is where the Seat Tarraco delivers in spades. The 7 seater model has space a-plenty; whether you’re rushing from a shoot to press appointments, transporting crews and props, or if you’re simply dying to make that bucket list fly/drive holiday a reality. Nailing its flag to the luxury mast, it comes with all the mod-cons: a full sunroof, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth and rear cameras to name a few. Fun fact: it comes equipped with side mirror sensors, perfect for navigating narrow city streets. Public service announcement: the large boot is also perfect for facilitating shopping sprees, not that Team Irish Tatler need any encouragement.

The Day Tripper

Test Drive: Ford Ecosport Titanium 1.0 120PS 4Door Automatic
Price: From €25,000
Per Month Finance with
First Citizen Finance DAC:  From €399 over 60 months (T&Cs apply)

Buying a car today we demand style, plus the performance to back it up. Finding a car that can provide both, without straying from one that can tackle both town and country briefs can be hard. For a first time SUV driver, plus a first-time automatic driver, a test drive on the Ford Ecosport Titanium could have meant a bit of time transitioning, however, we’re proud to report we took to it like a duck to water. Coming in at entry level in the SUV range the 1.0 engine is super-charged for ultimate power in a small engine, plus it’s got all the nifty accoutrements you’ve come to know and expect from a car of this standard: partial leather seat trim, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, Sat Nav, Ford Pass, steering wheel controls as well as rearview camera and parking sensors. On the road, the drive is smooth, the steering is quick-witted and the elevated position makes for a supremely comfortable drive; whether you’re zipping around town for coffee or day-tripping it further afield. (It helps that the sleek exterior is an excellent selfie accompaniment too.)

The Family Drive

Test Drive: Hyundai Tucson

Price: From €28,600

Per Month Finance with First Citizen Finance DAC: From €429 over 60 months (T&Cs apply)

Let’s be real: the average person doesn’t shop for a new car all that often, so perhaps it’s not surprising that when we do decide to take the plunge and get a new motor, we want it to be all things to all people. First to looks: a big, con dent front grill says SUV, making it right at home both by the GAA pitch and on the winding country roads. Smarter features on the executive model, which we drove for the week, included a wireless phone charging pad (yes, please! Why don’t all cars come with this!), heated front seats (dreamy) and the essential for-some rear view parking guidance. iPhone users will also delight in Apple Car Play - a sleek system that connects your home screen to your dash and lets you text, WhatsApp and call via Siri’s voice commands and has a very pretty seven-inch touchscreen display to control all your media and GPS while you drive. All in all, the Tucson gives the impression of a much more powerful car than it is (if that’s important to you) while remaining a pretty economical, roomy, family car that has everything the tech-obsessed driver needs in 2019.

The Eco Drive

Test Drive: Nissan Leaf (Electric)

Price:  From €29,690

Per Month Finance with First Citizen Finance DACFrom €439 over 60 months (T&Cs apply)

Sustainability may be the hottest trend of 2019, but Nissan has already firmly put their mark on the green market, releasing its second rendition of the Leaf. Unlike many popular hybrids, this car is fully electric – making it ultra-efficient and relatively inexpensive to run. A super-silent engine and smooth power also make for two strong boons. In the style stakes, it’s winning, compact but not small looking, in a beautiful deep red colour – not at all like the Back to the Future iteration we had envisioned. Another pro is that the accompanying charge plug fits a domestic socket so you needn’t rely on locating your nearest charging point when juice runs low. We say: it’s an oh-so-stylish way to do your bit for the environment.
