Dating Amber Is The New Irish Film You're Going To Fall For

Set in the 90s, Dating Amber tells the story of best friends Eddie and Amber who embark on a relationship in order to halt speculation about their respective sexualities.

You're about to fall in love.

In what has become known as one of the best years for Irish cinema, Screen Ireland and Amazon Prime Video has just dropped a trailer for Dating Amber, the latest Irish-centric piece set for stardom.

Set-in Ireland during the mid-90’s, Dating Amber follows the relationship of two secondary school students, Eddie (Fionn O’Shea) and Amber (Lola Petticrew, an Irish Tatler alum), who deduct that the best way to hide their respective sexualities from their prying school friends is to embark in a false relationship.

Eddie lives in hope that he, too, will follow his Dad into the army while Amber dreams of leaving it all behind her by moving to the liberal hub of London. However, their platonic arrangement begins to fall apart, forcing Eddie to confront his denial as Amber realises that an intervention must take place in order to save her best friend.

With a stark backdrop of relentless social stigma and the realities of rural living, the two outcasts take it upon themselves to only confide in one another until Catholic Ireland catches up with them.

Dating Amber is heartwarming, poignant and achingly funny – pinpointing exactly the frustrating struggles of living in a world where fitting in is the only option.

Speaking about the project, director David Freyne told RTE the piece“is as personal a film as I will ever make."

“It’s my love letter to my home and for all those kids who needed to escape to be themselves. And at its heart are two extraordinary young stars, Fionn O’Shea and Lola Petticrew. I’m so excited to share it on Amazon Prime Video, to bring some laughter in these uncertain times and for everyone to fall in love with Eddie and Amber.”

The film also stars a plethora of sublime Irish actors including Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), Barry Ward (Maze) and Simone Kirby (Artemis Fowl).

Dating Amber is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 4 before opening in cinemas later this year.
