Neven Maguire, one of Ireland’s best loved chefs is passionate about encouraging people to cook in their day-to-day lives.
Along with his MacNean House & Restaurant in Co Cavan, Maguire runs his own cookery school and has a cookware range with Dunnes Stores. “It’s always been a dream of mine, with the cookery school, to have my own cook range,” he explains. “The most asked question I get is, what are the best pots, pans and knives? That made me think okay, let’s work on this and that’s how the range came about.
“We wanted quality, we wanted it to be affordable and we wanted it to be practical. We thought of all the details of design and we test each product for six to nine months before we actually launch it. It’s a big range and the feedback has been phenomenal.”
NEVEN’S TOP 10 ESSENTIALS
1 THE SANTOKU KNIFE
I have to start off with the knives, which are Japanese steel. We have a new one called a santoku knife which is a Japanese-inspired design and I love it for chopping and slicing.
2 THE SKILLET PAN
I absolutely love this skillet pan for risottos, stews and casseroles. It has a tempered lid so it can go into the oven at 200°. It’s one of my hero pieces.
3 THE ESSENTIAL SPOON
This is such a clever little gadget. It’s a heatproof plastic spoon that doesn’t absorb flavours – I use it all the time.
4 THE SPATULA
We started off by doing all kinds of stainless steel headed utensils and then we moved on to silicone. People like silicone heads because they are not as abrasive on your non-stick pots and pans.
5 THE GARLIC CRUSHER
The amount of people that message me and say, you’re sold out of your garlic crusher. Where is it? When can we get it? It’s lovely to hear that people are using it because I don’t want it in your kitchen gathering dust. It’s fantastic – easy to use and easy to clean. (*Back in stores at the end of July.)
6 THE HAND GRATER
This is a great little piece that will do lovely zest and Parmesan. It’s very strong – if you think of a microplane, our two hand graters do exactly the same thing.
7 THE GRIDDLE PAN
I’m using the griddle pan a lot at the minute. It’s a non-stick pan so it’s really good for cooking chicken and fish if you look after it.
8 THE POT STAND
This is like a little silicone cross that opens out. So if you’re taking something off the heat or out of the oven and don’t want to damage your counter, it will protect your work area.
9 THE BAKEWARE
We use quite a few of the bakeware products in the restaurant. They’re made of a heavy gauge steel and look really classy. I have to give a shout out to the loaf tins and I love the trays for baking cookies. My daughter Lucia loves baking and we would use that quite a bit at home.
10 THE ARVA PLATE
We’re looking at new designs coming out in the next six months or so but we brought out a smaller, 10inch main course plate and it’s a bestseller. We’re always tweaking and learning and listening to our customers. I think that’s the most important thing.
