The Netflix Show That Everyone Will Be Talking About This Weekend

Trust us.

Cancel your plans, STAT.

Truly, we are living in the golden age of television – and the trailer for Netflix’s The Politician has proven that fact 10 times over.

The streaming platform reportedly forked out $300 million for Ryan Murphy, the man who created Glee, American Crime Story and Feud, for the eight-part series, which is due to debut in September. The Politician, a seriously star-studded anthology, focuses on the Machiavellian schemings of a young student politician.

The plot – although almost entirely under wraps – is supposedly a tongue-in-cheek study of how a President of the United States – or, indeed, any politician – comes into power. Full of comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy's The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.

It’s also been confirmed that the brilliant Janet Mock, a writer and guest director on Pose, has directed a single episode.

The Politician will stream on Netflix from today, September 27. Here's everything you need to know ahead of bingeing this weekend.

What is The Politician about?

In it, Tony-winner Ben Platt, who stars as Payton Hobart, has known since age seven that he's going to be President of the United States.

But first, he'll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School.

To get elected as Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image.

Full of comedy and sly satire, Ryan Murphy's The Politician offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician.

Think The Crown's anthology-style setting mixed with the high school drama of Glee and the political machinations of Reese Witherspoon in Election or House of Cards. We’re already hooked.

who stars in the politician?

The cast for The Politician is outrageously good. As mentioned above, Ben Platt will play Payton in his first major role since his Tony Award-winning turn in Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen. You might have seen Platt in Pitch Perfect as the sweet-faced magician Benji, or in Ricki and the Flash or Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

Meanwhile, the likes of Lucy Boynton and Zoey Deutch take a turn as his ruthless classmates. But that's far from all, The Politician will also feature Bette Midler, Jessica Lange, Judith Light and Bob Balaban.

Appearing as his adopted mother? None other than Academy-Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow.

And we saved the best for last – appearing as Platt's adopted mother is none other than Gwyneth Paltrow.

how can i watch?

The 10-part series launches in full today, September 27 only on Netflix.

Although it's usually too early to make predictions about subsequent seasons before season one has even aired, in this case, we've already got an answer: Yes, there will be a second season of The Politician.

According to a Deadline report, The Politician was the subject of a major bidding war between Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix, from which the latter emerged victorious. As a result, the deal between creator Ryan Murphy and Netflix included a straight-to-series order for not one, but two seasons, right off the bat, with future seasons to be determined at a later date.
