Striking the balance between natural makeup and a high end polish isn't always easy. Here's how we're doing it this spring summer.
Sunny days and sultry nights call for a bold, yet low-maintenance look. A high end, no makeup look that has a dewy complexion at its heart is what we're craving for this spring season. “There is a modern simplicity to shine that is incredibly flattering,” says makeup artist to the stars and catwalk guru Val Garland. “Glosses, oils and shines look authentic, as if they are coming from within the skin." While shine can look clean and groomed, it can equally nod to a worn in, worn off imperfection, that oozes an irresistibly laid-back vibe.

“Anti-perfection looks very modern now,” adds Tom Pecheux, who led makeup for MAC at Altuzarra last season. Skip foundation in favour of targeted skincare, concealer where necessary, and a dusting of bronzer along the cheekbones and temples. For ‘exotic enough for evening’ eyes, diffuse out a kohl liner in the water and lash lines with an eye gloss. This is a look that’s min on time, max on ease and will continue to look better and more ‘lived-in’ as you party the night away. Think makeup that moves and migrates – a celebration of how balms, oils and emollient textures enhance the individuality of makeup, by melting it into and around features. And the best tool? Your fingers. Their warmth will help the gloss become one with the skin.
