In Defence Of Amber Gill

Who among us has never made a snide comment?

The world has turned its back on Love Island Season Five contestant Amber Gill.

The 21-year-old beauty therapist from Newcastle has seen her world turned upside down in recent weeks by entering the Majorca villa, battling public opinion, falling for a man who has since betrayed her, and now, once again, feeling public rath.

This is down to her doling out snide comments to both her former flame and his new partner.

Something that particularly rubbed viewers up the wrong way was Amber taking jabs at the girl's looks. This was inherently wrong and, undoubtedly, something the 21-year-old will grow to regret. However, who amongst us hasn't said "they're nothing on you" to a friend whose other half's new flame has become apparent?

Comparison, although futile and pain-inducing, is natural and sometimes acting outwardly is a kneejerk reaction on the road back to full health.

Things came to an icy head on Wednesday night as Michael said: "Every time, I say something to you, you laugh in my face which I think is really disrespectful."

Amber's answer? "It's not out of disrespect for anyone because I had loads of respect for you. Maybe it was wrong of me to just assume you understood the way that I was and I should have said 'look, I’m not being disrespectful, just laughing in these situations because it's a bit awkward or I don’t really know what to say'… I assumed you knew me a lot more than you did."

For someone whose maturity has been questioned since day one, her handling of this explosive situation has been exquisite. Wavering at times, altogether she has proven that you can rise above situations gracefully – especially when you have a 6ft7 demigod's shoulder to cry on.

She held it together until chatting to Anna on the daybeds, revealing "He said ‘I knew you’d laugh.’ Do you want me to break down in front of everyone? His whole attitude and demeanour have totally changed and if that’s really him then I’m disappointed."

Michael's handling of the situation has also been hugely criticised, with a huge number online actually calling him out for gaslighting her when telling her to lower her voice when she was speaking at a normal level.

"I just feel if I’m totally honest with you, that biting your tongue thing has come out of the blue and laughing in your face, that was one incident," she told him. "I thought it was squashed but clearly you hold a grudge."

"Maybe it was wrong of me to just assume you understood the way that I was and I should have said, 'Look, I’m not being disrespectful', just laughing in these situations because it's a bit awkward or I don’t really know what to say. I’m not sure why I laugh but it's certainly not out of disrespect… I assumed you knew me a lot more than you did."

"You never really allowed me to open up to you because you didn’t really open up to me," Michael insisted. "That’s the ultimate point."

While more-often-than-not it seems easier to criticise men on dating shows than women, Michael actually acted psychologically out of turn here, confusing 'following his heart' with wanting to crack on with a bikini-clad temptress.

Say what you like about Amber, but loyal, open and honest she is. She has dealt with difficult problems head-on and, although blips in the matrix have occurred, remained true to what she thinks is right.
