Everything You Need To Know About This Year's Met Gala

T-Minus 5 days...

like everything...

The Met Gala is one of the most exciting fashion events on the calendar, where the Met's Costume Institute hosts a benefit to introduce its latest exhibition to the world and to raise money for the museum.

Founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the gala was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York's high society. Now, 71 years later, the event is chaired by Anna Wintour who has swapped out New York's high society for the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art.

Each year, the theme of the exhibition is celebrated in the dress code for the gala, which usually results in some of the most fantastical, outrageous and over-the-top A-list ensembles.

From the date to the theme and everything else in between, here's everything there is to know about the Met Gala 2019

When

The Met Gala takes place on the first Monday of May every year. This year, that date falls on May 6. Red carpet coverage begins at 7 pm local time meaning you'll need to stay awake

Where

As always, the Met Gala will take place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The night begins with a cocktail hour, in which guests walk the red carpet, visit the new exhibition, sit down for dinner and enjoy the evening's performances.

The Theme

Theatrics will play a leading role on the red carpet as this year's theme is 'Camp: Notes on Fashion.' In this sense, the term 'camp' refers to exaggerated fashion. The exhibition will be inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay that defines camp as "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration". There will be 175 pieces in the show, both men's and women's, which will be divided into two sections. The first will deal with the origins of camp and the second with the ways in which contemporary designers have used this irony and exaggeration in their collections.

The Co-Hosts

Two words: Harry Styles. Rather fittingly for the theme, this year's Met Gala will be co-chaired by Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and the creative director of Gucci (who are sponsoring the event), Alessandra Michele.

The Guests

As one of the most prestigious events on the fashion calendar, there will be more than your fair share of A-listers in attendance. Although we aren't privy to the entire guest list before the event, we are aware of the host list which features Bradley Cooper, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lopez, Venus Williams, Donatella Versace - to name but a few.

While the Met Gala is often referred to as the Oscars of fashion, sadly that's where the comparisons end as the benefit is not televised so you'll have to keep an eye on irishtatler.com and our Instagram account for all the looks from the Met Gala 2019.
