Shell jewellery, but not as you know it.
This week, & Other Stories launched a limited-edition collaboration with innovative, Swedish jewellery designer Mia Larsson, renowned for giving materials from the sea a second life.
With sustainability at the core of her art, the collection features handcrafted, one-of-a-kind pieces made of oyster shells and recycled silver.
Back in 2011, while studying for an M.A. at the art school Konstfack in Stockholm, a class on sustainability transformed the way Mia viewed nature and from then on, she decided to only use recycled and decomposable materials for her jewellery.
“I think it is amazing that the oyster builds this beautiful and high tech ceramic material around them as a protection from intruders. I find jewellery fascinating because it can tell stories about your faith or connect you with places and loved ones. It is a piece of art that connects you to the world,” says Larsson.
& Other Stories had long admired Mia’s work and dreamt about bringing her gems into their own world and for the SS/19 season, that dream did indeed come true, resulting in a sustainable co-lab jewellery collection, celebrating the beauty of nature and human’s deep connection with it.
Timeless and sculptural, the collection features seven powerful pieces — rings, earrings, a hairclip and a necklace — all made of recyclable and decomposable materials from the sea.
Mia created the collection by picking up oyster shells from a seafood restaurant in Stockholm, washing them in her atelier, and then handcrafting the shells and the recycled silver into unique pieces of jewellery.
To complement the jewellery, & Other Stories’ Stockholm design atelier created a ready-to-wear collection, inspired by the treasures of the sea.
“The inspiration for this sustainable capsule collection comes from the shimmery insides of oyster shells,” says Marie Nilsson, Concept Designer, & Other Stories.
In shades of pearl, off white and blue, the collection offers a wave splash of clashing textures – upcycled tulle, rustic linen and organic cotton, all elevated by precious pleats and exquisite embroideries celebrating ocean life.
