But there will be Frank Ocean so not all hope is lost.
Festival season is nearly upon us, and the Coachella 2020 lineup has been revealed. This year, previously announced headliner Rage Against the Machine, set to play on both Fridays, will be followed by Travis Scott, set to play on both Saturdays and Frank Ocean on both Sundays. While all signs point toward a promising and exciting festival, there's just one problem: the lineup features zero women.
For context, Coachella has been around for a very long time. The festival first took shape in 1993 as a Pearl Jam rock concert at the Empire Polo Club, and years later, it was officially launched in 1999 with Beck, Tool, and Rage Against the Machine headlining the three day-event. In the years that followed, the festival evolved to include a wider range of genres like EDM, pop, hip hop, and soul. However, as more and more acts were introduced to Coachella, men still remained to top the bills.
It wasn't until 2002 when the festival featured its first-ever female headling act with none other than Bjork (who would later return to the main stage in 2007). A decade later, Beyoncé became Coachella's second solo female headliner — and the first ever Black woman to headline the California-based festival — and her two high powered weekend performances spawned the gifts that are Netflix's Homecoming and an accompanying live album of the same name. Most recently, 2019 saw Ariana Grande join the exclusive club with her Thank U, Next-themed performances.
However, Coachella have been kind enough to include some women within their lineup. Megan Thee Stallion is the sole artist of five featured just below Rage Against the Machine; similarly, Summer Walker is one of seven on Saturday under Travis Scott. Lana Del Rey, FKA twigs, Marina, and Ari Lennox all fall below Frank Ocean on Sunday. The entire lineup is comprised of approximately one-third female artists or acts in which women are prominently featured.
'What's the big deal?' I hear misogynists cry. Well, to be *ahem* Frank: Lineup placement matters; where and when artists perform during the festival affects how much money they're paid and sets the stage for future appearances at other major venues. By relegating women to the smaller stages, Coachella is effectively limiting their opportunities. Disappointing, but sadly not surprising.
