But Prince Harry won't be her date.
After Harry and Meghan recently announced that they would be stepping down – with the Queen's seal of approval – many have speculated what the life of a post Sussex shift Meghan Markle would look like. Perhaps she would return to acting? Or even relaunch her currently defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig?
The world truly is Markle's oyster and it would seem the pearl inside is actually an invitation to the Met Gala.
As reported by Page Six, Meghan Markle will be attending the 2020 Met Gala hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 4 with British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Edward Enninful. Markle and Enninful famously worked together on British Vogue’s Forces For Change issue in 2019, an issue which marked the duchess’s first guest editorship.
With Enniful as her date to the annual fashion party, Prince Harry will likely be sitting this one out. “Naturally Meghan was one of the first names on the guest list, and Edward’s team are excited that the two will go together," said a source. “Meghan is keen to step out occasionally without Harry so that she can establish herself once more in Hollywood."
Meghan has also reportedly picked out a “glamorous androgynous” look tied to this year's theme: "About Time: Fashion and Duration." The exhibition will explore the connection between fashion and time through writings of authors, such as the late Virginia Woolf — including her novel Orlando, which sees the main character transition from a man to a woman.
Markle’s reported appearance comes 24 years after Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, walked the very same Met steps at the 1996 Met Gala in a John Galliano for Dior navy slip dress paired with her iconic seven-strand pearl and sapphire choker to the event which honoured Christian Dior himself.
Meanwhile, Meghan's attendance will be a welcomed surprise to the woman responsible for the entire event, Anna Wintour. Last year, Wintour revealed that the duchess and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton were the top two names on her dream guest list during an appearance on the Today show. "I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together," Wintour said. "That would be my dream couple. They could leave their husbands at home. It's the two of them I want."
Whatever the future holds career-wise for Markle, one thing is certain—we cannot wait to see Markle’s take on Met Gala red carpet dressing.
