Pinterest, the virtual noticeboard giant, has released its list of trends for 2019.

While we were surprised to see that succulents made the cut in the home and living section, surely we all have enough tiny plants left to neglect on shelves in our homes by now, right?  The food trends section, however, showed us a few surprises and a few trends we can't wait to get involved in. Read on to find out what Pinterest thinks will be big in 2019.

Super powders

While we thought that matcha might have already had its day, it appears that Pinterest disagrees as searches for super powders rose by 144 per cent this year. Expect to see lots of options to add healthy powders to your smoothies and juices in the new year.

Bravocado

You’ll be happy to hear that the avo craze won’t be going anywhere in 2019, but people will be thinking more sustainably about their guac. Yes, ethical awareness has even reached your avocado toast, so Pinterest reports that there will be a spike in people growing their own avocado trees in 2019.

Do-nut worry

It seems that donuts haven’t sung their swan song yet either, as the donut décor trend looks like it will continue in popularity next year. Pinterest reported that searches for donut décor were up 748 per cent, so expect to see PJs, mugs and more decorated like your favourite pastry from here on in.

Mushroom mania

The most underrated vegetable in existence, in our opinion, will finally be seeing a resurgence. Mushrooms will be on menus everywhere, as well as randomly popping up in coffees, chocolate bars and more weird places, so keep your eyes peeled.

Oat-ally awesome

Ditch the almond, soya and coconut milk everyone, because oat milk is now the top dog! You might have seen brands like Oatly cropping up in coffee shops around the country this year, but 2019 looks like it will be the year of the oat, so make sure you’re ahead of the curve and start ordering it in your flat white now.

Pegan?

What is the pegan diet you might ask? Well, Pinterest tells us that is part paleo, part vegan. To be honest we don’t even know what you will be able to eat on this diet (maybe just sweet potatoes?), so let us know how you get on if you go pegan in 2019!

Oxtail obsession

Oxtail is finally coming back into fashion and we are thrilled! Searches for oxtail recipes were up 209% on Pinterest, with slow-cooker recipes being of particular interest. If you want to get ahead of the curve, start out by cooking the Food & Wine recipe at the link below.

Pump up the jam

There’s nothing better than a nice bit of jam on some hot, buttered toast. Or on a fresh scone with lots of cream. Or a slice of toasted sourdough with some crunchy peanut butter. Basically, what we’re saying is that we love jam! Homemade jam is on trend, so get your sugar thermometer out and start cooking.

Go get that bread!

There is nothing like the scent of fresh bread, straight from the oven. Make your house smell like a boulangerie and get kneading, as home-baked bread is set to be more popular than ever.

The bee’s knees

Beeswax wraps are the eco-friendly option for your packed lunch for 2019. We included them in our stocking stuffers this Christmas (we’re ahead of the curve, in case you didn’t notice!).
