Not buying this dress? "Big mistake. Big. Huge."
Sorry. I simply couldn't resist quoting such an iconic scene from Pretty Woman, whereby Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) has a fashion makeover of modern-day Cinderella proportions. Albeit, more thanks to a limitless credit card and Rodeo Drive boutiques than a magical fairy godmother.
Despite being almost 30 years old (!!) the style in the hit movie still resonates. Naturally, I'm alluding to Ward's sartorial choices post lady of the night.
Arguably the most iconic look worn by Roberts in any of the 60-odd movie roles she has played in her lengthy career is the outfit she wore to the polo in Pretty Woman. Sans bra, of course, because after all - this was the '90s.
The original outfit was the work of award-winning costume designer Marilyn Vance. Her sleeveless, boat-neck midi, which she styled to elegant perfection with a wide waist belt, white hat, gloves, and kitten heels, seems to have been weighing on the minds of fashion designers and buyers alike this year.
Retro-inspired brown polka dot numbers, from satin wrap dresses to flirty long-sleeved sundresses, have infiltrated both high street and high-end stores.
Feeling nostalgic? Or just looking for a simple Halloween costume? In one of these numbers, "No one could look as good as you" - as Roy Orbison famously sang.
