Brother Vellies gets Rih's seal of approval.
There is a lot to say about the Savage x Fenty NYFW show, not limited to the following: diverse casting, animal print, pregnant models, interpretive dancing, cellulite, and Hadids. It looked wild, fun, and inclusive: in an industry not always synonymous with those adjectives.
Rihanna’s dancers, models, and muses took over the Brooklyn Navy Yard for the lingerie show to end all shows. Showcasing glow-in-the-dark garters, maternity underwear, plus-size intimates, boudoir robes, women contorted themselves into Yoga poses and dipped their feet into iridescent ponds. If reports are to be believed, pregnant model Slick Woods actually went into labour right after the show!
Gigi Hadid was tasked with opening the parade, flanked by choreographed dancers and a slightly eerie soundtrack. Hadid Jr., Bella, was also in the troupe. Surrounded by science-themed props and models with tattoos and punk-rock hair cuts, it was about as far from their usual outings on the Victoria’s Secret runway as you can image.
Another aspect that caught our eye were the pastel-hued marabou slides worn by the dancers. To compliment her lingerie, Rihanna turned to Brooklyn-based Canadian accessories designer Aurora James.
James’ five-year-old label Brother Vellies has found cult fans not just for its frivolous aesthetic, but for its serious commitments to sustainable and ethical values. James works with artisans in countries like South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, and Morocco, who hand make the accessories in a safe environment.
"Relying on local artisans within Africa to craft each shoe, our workforces are entirely local to each of our workshops. They receive fair wages and skills training from other experienced artisans. Empowering people within Africa by giving them jobs instead of handouts is the best possible way to ensure long term growth and development on the continent," the website reads.
Award-winning designer James also notes that the brand is further improving on its sustainability foundation - integrating recycled denim and using elements of donated shoes.
Among the brand's most popular offerings are shearling sandals, desert boots, suede pumps, and woven slides. On the arm candy front, there's no shortage of clutches and bowling bags rendered in vegetable-dyed leather and animal hair.
While James has already found her feet amongst the fashion crowd, a nod from Rihanna is surely going to send her waitlist through the roof. Get it while it's hot!
