What To Watch Now That Big Little Lies Is Over Forever*

*until the third season is announced

It's time to bid the Monterey Five farewell.

Big Little Lies, Season 2 has sadly come to an end, and there's currently no hope nor rumour for a third season.

As HBO’s drama starring literally all of your favourite actresses has come to an end, it’s hard to not think about what might be next. Unfortunately, there’s probably nothing coming next. Originally, the show was supposed to be a limited series with just one season, clocking in at eight episodes and we were actually extremely lucky to be blessed with a second series. So, let's not push our luck hoping for a third.

The show is already kinda living a lie. Big Little Lies entered into the Emmys as a limited series and won Emmys for being a limited series (technically this was before anyone knew there would be more - but still).

While it's going to be hard to get over *that* finale, here, we take a look at some worthy replacements.

Broadchurch

The first season of this series takes place in a close-knit seaside town – sound familiar? Detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller (David Tennant and Olivia Colman) are sent to hunt down the murderer of an 11-year-old boy and discover that all is not as it seems.

Gypsy

Sadly, there's only one season of the Netflix show, which co-starred Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, even though it had all the makings of a twisty six-season-long thriller. Created by Lisa Rubin, with two episodes directed by BAFTA-nominee Sam Taylor-Johnson, Gypsy follows psychologist Jean as she gets inappropriately involved with her patients and their partners. Sophie Cookson plays Sidney, the object of Jean's affection, in an enigmatic and career-making performance

how to get away with murder

Both Big Little Lies and How to Get Away with Murder aren’t your run-of-the-mill murder mysteries. Quite the contrary, these shows actually show very little murder itself. In Big Little Lies, you’re left wondering who it is that’s actually dead. In the law drama How to Get Away with Murder, a law teacher presents her students with details on real cases and the students try to solve those cases in creative and varying ways. The show explores both the criminal and procedural parts of murder while also diving into each character’s life, all tied together with lots of suspense.

Better call saul

Easily the greatest character in Breaking Bad, the prequel works as both a spin-off and a standalone drama. Before he became Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), Jimmy McGill was a hapless lawyer intent on impressing his way more successful brother. Kim Wexler (Rhea Seahorn), a fellow associate and sometime love interest, tries to support Jimmy, but his proclivities are a little too much to handle. Season 5 is due in 2020.

dEAD TO ME

Dead to Me has all the soapy qualities we love in a show. The drama is high-stakes, the twists are actually shocking, and the dialogue is sharp. But the series also tackles some intense issues from an authentic female lens. Dead to Me was created by a woman, Liz Feldman, and more than half of the episodes were led by female directors. Also great: All 10 episodes were crafted by woman screenwriters and only two of those received input from a man. That's all to say this show is female in its DNA, and it shows in the ways Judy and Jen are portrayed.

kILLING eVE

Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge of Fleabag fame, BBC America's thriller co-stars Sandra Oh as MI5 agent Eve as she tracks down assassin Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer. Killing Eve Season 3 is definitely happening, which will come as a relief to anyone disappointment by the unlikelihood of season 3 of Big Little Lies. Unsurprisingly, both actresses are up for Emmys in 2019.

Desperate Housewives

Desperate Housewives is another one of those prime-time soap operas. The series follows a group of women living in the same seemingly idyllic suburban communities, each with their own dark secrets. And like Big Little Lies, it all starts with a mysterious death.

Sharp Objects

Based on Gillian Flynn's (Gone Girlbook of the same nameSharp Objects contains an ongoing murder mystery, intense family dynamics, and an intricate protagonist in the form of Amy Adams. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who was responsible for Big Little Lies Season 1, Sharp Objects features sumptuous cinematography, an addictive soundtrack, and the kind of complicated female characters we've dreamed about our entire lives.

The Affair

Big Little Lies starts with the investigation of a murder and then flashes back in time to reveal how these characters got to this place. The Affair uses a similar technique in the story of a man from a wealthy family who has an affair with a troubled girl and how their relationship results in a murder.

Enlightened

Want more Laura Dern? In this comedy-drama, she plays a woman who, after having a ‘philosophical awakening’ in rehab, tries to get her life back on track. The series ran on HBO for two short seasons, and Dern won a Golden Globe for her performance as impassioned (and very slightly unhinged) office worker Amy Jellicoe.
