Grown Ups Can Play Dress Up Too: The Spice Girls Edition

When one attends a Spice Girl concert, one can never be Too Much

T-Minus 1 day...

Say what you will about Geri's dodgy highlights or Mel B's love for neon green, but one simple fact remains: the dress codes of the Spice Girls were era-defining.

Nineties nostalgia has long been in fashion (platform sandals are back, Latte lipliner is a best-seller for every brand, cycling shorts and bum bags are everywhere) but a direct recreation the most iconic looks isn't particularly appealing to even the die-hard fans.

So, in honour of the Spice World Reunion Tour, here we present how to update their distinct wardrobe with a slightly more grown-up appeal.

Ginger Spice

It's hard to think of Geri in anything other than that Union Jack dress, but she did have other statement outfits over the years. Mostly leather, usually with a feminist slant and almost always paired with red boots.

Items L-R: Girl Power T-shirt, €18.86, UncommonTee; Red Leather Block Heel Ankle Boots, €80, River Island; Hot Lips, Carina's Love, €32, Charlotte Tilbury

Baby Spice

During a time when girlishness has been reclaimed as a political statement, and millennial pink was simply called pink, Baby Spice style takes on a whole new meaning. Today, short satin slip dresses and Buffalo boots should be embraced minus the infantilisation.

Items L-R: Button Mini Slip Dress, €40, Topshop; Suede Pink Platform Trainers, €193.55, Puma X Buffalo;12-Pack Hair Elastics, €1.99, H&M

Sporty Spice

Proving to be ahead of her time, luxe athleisure has become a staple component in contemporary wardrobes and a tracksuit has been decreed acceptable for nearly every occasion.

Items L-R: ADIBREAK Tracksuit Bottoms, €48.97, Adidas; Tread Trainer, €90, Everlane; Neon Crop Top, €9, River Island

Scary Spice

The original queen of animal print, Mel B has a particular tendency for baring her mid-riff at any conceivable opportunity; low-slung leopard print onesies, leather jackets without a top underneath; animal print crop tops. Luckily for Mel, an abundance of clashing animal print is particularly on-trend – so feel free to go wild.

Items from L-R: Cropped Jersey Top, €9.99, H&MWide Jersey Trousers, €17.99, H&M, Gold Hoop Earrings, €9.95, Zara

Posh Spice

Though she won't be joining the rest of the girls on their reunion tour, we couldn't leave Victoria out. Transforming a black bodycon into something resolutely contemporary, Posh proved the true power that resides in a little black 'Gucci' dress. Remember: less is more.

Items from L-R: Gabrielle Stretch-Crepe Dress, €672, Alex Perry; Strippy Black Heeled Sandals, €49, Topshop; Rouge Coco Flash, €36, Chanel
