Knits, But Make It Fashion

This is knit.

Allow us to introduce to you: the Summer Knit

While knitwear tends to be associated with the colder, winter months - warm weather woollens are officially a thing.

Why? Well, a knit is many things (reliable, hardworking, comforting) a signifier of sartorial cool, it is not. However, according to fashion today, knits are back with a new generation of wools that are reinventing the wheel and loom.

But, why now? Cue the explosion of Instagram, the discovery of trans-seasonal dressing and the acceptance that, deep breath, dressing fashionably can also equate to dressing for comfort. In true 2019 form, if you’re not pairing an oversized cable knit with an audaciously pleated midi-skirt, then – one begs the question – are you even fashion?

Show a hint of bare leg, layer up a lightweight trench for chillier mornings and, congratulations, you’ve nailed the ever-elusive transitional look that’s praised by fashion experts far and wide. The Irish Tatler team call these ‘new-gen knits’; that is knitwear pieces that act like the star of the show, rather than the supporting act. Thanks to the influence of Nordic culture, and our love for authentic ‘realness’ in our wardrobes, what used to be a love-worn staple now has as much fashion kudos as the newest It bag or the latest iteration of a loafer to strike gold with the style set.

Established in 1988, IrelandsEye are a rare breed in the indigenous clothing industry in that they are not produced on the furthest peninsula of Donegal or the rugged coast of Connemara, rather the family business was established in Sutton and still operates out of the same Baldoyle factory since its incarnation. Created using natural yarns, the New Dawn collection from IrelandsEye riffs on traditional craftsmanship, with a playful, contemporary silhouette, under the eye of one-to-watch designer Aisling Duff.

“When it came to designing a new collection, I knew I wanted to build on the traditional Aran knit techniques, taking some of those familiar details and play around with them in more modern silhouettes, mixing that chunky, cosy look with a more fresh, urban edge,”

Playing up on the Scandinavian idea of lagom or ‘just enough’ the label produces one considered capsule collection per year. In good news: a lack of air miles and a move away from fast fashion means that ever reliable purchase is made all the more special by a clean conscience. Hardworking and filled with fashion kudos: we’ll see you in the knitwear section.
